Duran hits stunning double as Celtic edge towards CL return

Celtic took a huge step towards a return to the Champions League with stunning goals from Benjamin Nygren and Camilo Duran. After crashing out in the play-off round 12 months ago, it was almost a nightmare start when Moses Usor fired into the Celtic's net just seconds after kick-off. But the Hoops were saved by the offside flag. They survived another scare before Nygren set the Hoops on their way, when he curled Kieran Tierney's ball into the top corner.Samuel Adeniran also denied by the offside flag before Duran smashed Tierney's cross into the net for his first Parkhead goal.It was an impressive strike, but there was better to come from the Colombian striker as he sidefooted into the far corner after a one-two with the club's other big summer arrival, Kasper Hogh. The pair, who scored 10 Champions League goals between them last season, proving their worth in green and white early in the season.Three up, but far from over. Colwill hits last-second stunner as Cardiff fight back to deny Wrexham

Cardiff earned the most dramatic point on their return to the Sky Bet Championship as Rubin Colwill's stunning 98th-minute free-kick earned a 1-1 draw against Wrexham.Former Bluebirds striker Kieffer Moore had given the visitors the lead with a cracking strike after just two minutes and 26 seconds at the Cardiff City Stadium, in the first meeting between the two Welsh sides in 24 years. It was his seventh goal against Cardiff - against no side has he scored more in his career. That looked to be enough to secure a winning start for the Red Dragons, who missed out on a place in the play-offs last season - and thus a chance at a fourth straight promotion - by a margin of just two points.Cardiff had looked bright in spells, but found clear-cut openings hard to come by - and when Wrexham captain Dom Hyam headed a cross onto his own crossbar, it looked as though their final chance had come and gone. But after George Dobson brought down Joel Colwill inches outside the penalty area, his older brother fired a beauty into the top-left corner to spark opening-night jubilation in South Wales.

Jacquet scores on debut as Liverpool beat Como

Jacquet scores on debut as Liverpool beat Como

Jeremy Jacquet was the star as Liverpool enjoyed a confidence-boosting 2-0 win over Como in their final pre-season friendly at Anfield. The 21-year-old defender was making his debut for the club after signing from Rennes in February and marked the occasion by scoring the second goal just before half-time to double the lead for Andoni Iraola's side after Cody Gakpo had fired in the opener.Gakpo set up Jacquet for his tap-in which proved to be the final act by the French youngster as he made way for fellow new arrival Ronald Araujo at half-time. The tempo dropped and that suited Como who played more of the football in the second half.Liverpool had contrived to lose a two-goal lead against Monaco last week but there was no repeat - Ryan Gravenberch even hitting the crossbar late on. As well as Gakpo and Jacquet, Jeremie Frimpong and Rio Ngumoha were among those to impress for Iraola's side. There are others with work to do. Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz both scored against Monaco, but the former Newcastle striker faded here after a striking a post early on, while the German playmaker flattered to deceive. The real stuff begins next Sunday at St James' Park.8 - POST! Isak strikes a bouncing ball against the foot of the far post23 - GOAL! Frimpong brilliantly finds Gakpo to fire Liverpool ahead44 - GOAL! Gakpo lays the ball across for Jacquet to tap it home58 - CLOSE! Rodriguez fires a shot into the side-netting for Como85 - CLOSE! Diao skims the Liverpool crossbar on the counter-attack89 - BAR! Szoboszlai works it to Gravenberch but he hits the barJacquet's name was read out last when the teams were announced as Anfield gave him a special welcome and the young defender responded with a standout performance. The Frenchman certainly pressed his claims for a start against Newcastle next week. The first cheers for Jacquet came within 30 seconds as a result of a couple of purposeful passes that indicated his willingness to add some drive to a Liverpool backline that was guilty of being a little bit too sluggish on the ball under Arne Slot last term. And the crowd were chanting his name a quarter of an hour in when he produced a strong challenge right in front of the Kop before doing well to hold off his man in the follow-up tussle for possession. Jacquet looks serene but there is steel there as well.It was not flawless. He missed a challenge just before the half-hour mark and needed Frimpong to save him with a covering challenge. There was a clumsy miskicked clearance soon after that he made up for with a crucial interception inside the area. But the goal, tapping in Gakpo's cross, capped off a fine 45 minutes before he was withdrawn at the break. Araujo has been brought in on loan but Jacquet is seen as the long-term solution at the back for Liverpool and this was a very encouraging start. The statistics show Ibrahima Konate was quick but it could sometimes take a while for the legs to get going. Now 35, Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk needs pace around him in that defence now. In Jacquet, he appears to have found his ideal new partner.

West Ham blow two-goal lead at Burnley to draw on Championship return

Zian Flemming struck twice late on as Burnley came back to deny West Ham in a 2-2 Championship draw between the freshly relegated sides at Turf Moor.West Ham, strong favourites to make an immediate return to the Premier League, looked set for three points when Manor Solomon rifled home in the 72nd minute, doubling the lead given to them by Max Kilman 10 minutes in.But Burnley kept scrapping, and Flemming struck an 83rd-minute penalty before finding the net in stoppage time to give his boss Nicky Hayen a first league point on his 46th birthday, and prevent what would have been their first home Championship defeat since April 2023.West Ham may have lost Mateus Fernandes and Crysencio Summerville for big transfer fees since the drop, but have crucially kept Jarrod Bowen and this week broke the Championship transfer record with a Β£22m deal for Arne Engels to underline their promotion credentials. It was too soon for Engels to be involved here but for much of the afternoon Nuno Espirito Santo's side looked to have the edge in quality against a Burnley team who too often made the wrong decision and wasted first-half opportunities. There was less than a minute gone when Flemming flicked over from Jacob Bruun Larsen's cross, but it was a false dawn for Burnley as West Ham scored from their first real chance.Kilman took advantage of poor defending, easily peeling away from Aaron Ramsey to head in Bowen's free-kick for his first goal in 68 West Ham appearances. With former manager David Moyes watching on, West Ham were bossing possession as a full away end dominated the atmosphere at Turf Moor, with plenty of bright touches from Solomon - a key part of Leeds' promotion campaign two years ago.Burnley had the momentum at the start of the second half but Flemming had already wasted two excellent chances before he got above Konstantinos Mavropanos to send Marcus Edwards' inswinging cross onto the post, from where it bounced back into the arms of a grateful Mads Hermansen.Flemming's frustration then grew as another effort was cleared off the line by Ollie Scarles from Bruun Larsen's corner.West Ham's first shot of the second half did not come until the 71st minute when Bowen's strike hit his own man in Kilman, but Burnley never fully cleared it and Mohamadou Kante danced down the touchline before his cross was deflected for Solomon to lash home. But Burnley got a lifeline when Scarles scythed down Edwards in the box and Flemming sent Hermansen the wrong way, and two minutes into the seven added on, the ball broke to him following a scramble in the box and he picked out the bottom corner.

Rangers, Hearts and Hibs through in League Cup as Stenhousemuir shock Motherwell

Derek McInnes earned his first win as Rangers manager with a dominant 5-1 victory over holders St Mirren to advance to the quarter-finals of the Scottish League Cup.Ryan Naderi - who was picked in front of captain Lawrence Shankland to lead the line - opened the scoring with his first goal since April before summer signing Vanja Dragojevic produced a stunning long-range volley to net his first in Rangers colours.Chris Mochrie replied with a spectacular strike of his own on the half hour mark but the visitors were eventually outclassed in the second period.New signing James Penrice cleverly teed up Djeidi Gassama for the third before marking an impressive debut with a goal of his own in the 54th minute. The Buddies' misery was then compounded when substitute Ross McCausland scored on his first Rangers appearance in 16 months - shortly after stopper Ivor Pandur had denied Killian Philipps from the penalty spot.Elsewhere, Heart of Midlothian and Hibernian safely progressed while Stenhousemuir pulled off an unlikely upset to knock out last year's semi-finalists Motherwell.Euan O'Reilly's dramatic extra-time winner earned the Scottish Championship outfit a place in the last eight as Marvin Bartley extended his winning start as Warriors' boss to seven matches.Got Sky? Arsenal thump Man City to send statement with Community Shield win

Arsenal thump Man City to send statement with Community Shield win

Title-holders Arsenal delivered a statement performance in the Community Shield, thumping Man City 3-0 in Cardiff to send out a warning to all of their Premier League rivals. The Gunners shocked City and their new boss Enzo Maresca with just 23 seconds on the clock when Myles Lewis-Skelly's sublime pass teed up Riccardo Calafiori to coolly convert the opener. The post-Pep Guardiola era couldn't have got off to a worse start for City.Arsenal's Β£34m summer signing Christos Tzolis then made the next two, heading across goal for Kai Havertz to force the second through Gianluigi Donnarumma before finding captain Martin Odegaard to tuck in a third just three minutes after half-time at the Principality Stadium.Donnarumma was sat down by Odegaard for that goal and it summed up his poor performance behind a City defence which looked all over the place. They had needed Josko Gvardiol to clear Odegaard's effort off the line just before half-time when Donnarumma spilt the ball and the returning Bukayo Saka passed up two good chances to add more goals. In contrast, Arsenal's backline, which had been questioned in pre-season after shipping eight goals in four matches, was robust. Their determination to shut City out was summed up when David Raya saved from Erling Haaland, Lewis-Skelly reached the rebound and then Ben White threw himself in front of a Jeremy Doku shot.Christos Tzolis is the first Arsenal player to assist two or more goals on his debut for the club since Willian in September 2020.Erling Haaland and Β£116m Elliot Anderson were withdrawn after underwhelming and the absence of Barcelona target Rodri was impossible to ignore. Yet, as Maresca searches for the right formula after City's decade of success under Guardiola, Mikel Arteta's Arsenal are primed to capitalise on their position of strength.Arsenal started Myles Lewis-Skelly, with the midfielder seemingly part of Mikel Arteta's plans after links away, but Gabriel Martinelli and Ethan Nwaneri weren't involved.Man City left Savinho out of their squad, amid interest from Spurs in the winger, while Barcelona target Rodri was also absent after just returning from his World Cup break and a back treatment. Jack Grealish came on as a second half sub for his first City appearance since May 2025.The last team to win the Community Shield and then win the Premier League title was Man City in 2018/19 when they landed a domestic treble. Subsequent success from winning this curtain-raiser is no guarantee but Sunday's victory looks like a launchpad for Arsenal as they go in search of back-to-back top-flight crowns for the first time in 91 years. Not got Sky? Martin Odegaard clips the ball to the back post where Christos Tzolis nods it across goal for Kai Havertz to head through Gianluigi Donnarumma.36: MISS! Jeremy Doku threads a pass for Erling Haaland but he skews his right-foot shot well off target.38: YELLOW! Calafiori goes down in the box looking for a penalty from Abdukodir Khusanov's challenge but is booked for simulation.40: SAVE! Raya parries Haaland's shot and Lewis-Skelly scrambles away the loose ball - but then Ben White has to block Doku's shot when Antoine Semenyo crosses.43: CLOSE! White crosses for Calafiori to hit a volley but his effort goes wide.45+1: OFF THE LINE! Josko Gvardiol scrambles the ball out of the City goalmouth after Martin Odegaard flicked the ball towards the net from a Donnarumma spill.Half-Time: SUBS! Jack Grealish came on for his first Man City appearance since May 2025. Declan Rice also made his return to action for Arsenal.48: GOAL! Martin Odegaard sits down Donnarumma and then prods in an Arsenal third from Tzolis' pass. The past three Community Shields have been decided on penalties - Arsenal’s 3-0 win over Manchester City is the biggest margin of victory in a Community Shield game since 2014, when the Gunners beat the same opponent by the exact same scoreline.63: CHANCE! Great play from Odegaard and then Declan Rice as they work the ball to Bukayo Saka but his shot is wide of the near post.80: OVER! Saka skies another good chance from Piero Hincapie's low ball.81: SAVE! Raya is sharp to push away Semenyo's drive.Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard to TNT Sports:"We wanted to start here with the first trophy. We played some brilliant football so it was a great performance, a great way to start the season so let's keep it going. It was good for everyone to see our level. We showed that we're ready, we're serious, we want to do it again and there's more trophies to go. We're well prepared and ready to go."

Southampton baited over Spygate scandal in defeat at Watford

Southampton baited over Spygate scandal in defeat at Watford

Southampton discovered that the Championship will be an unforgiving arena this season as they were baited about Spygate on their way to being beaten 2-1 by a new-look Watford side at Vicarage Road.Playing their first league fixture since the espionage affair that saw them thrown out of the play-offs in May, Tonda Eckert's side had no answer to the home team's energy and tenacity.Summer signing Iker Bravo and teenage academy product Amin Nabizada gave new Watford manager Alessio Dionisi a fine win, while Southampton's players were heckled, both on the pitch and from the stands, for their actions at the end of last season. When Taylor Harwood-Bellis screwed a stoppage-time shot badly wide, the defender who was seen as one of the villains of the Spygate saga was verbally riled by a succession of Watford players. The defeat already leaves Southampton seven points off top spot, with the south coast side sitting at the foot of the table following their four-point deduction after the Spygate scandal. The Watford goals both came from errant Southampton passes.Jack Stephens' aimless kick was seized upon by Bravo, a summer arrival from Udinese. The 21-year-old Spaniard did not hesitate, driving forward and stabbing the ball home. The goal lifted the uncertainty that had enveloped Vicarage Road in the build-up to the new Championship season.Australia winger Nestory Irankunda was sold to Portuguese club Sporting Lisbon 24 hours earlier, while last season's captain Imran Louza was left out of the squad by Dionisi after the midfielder again asked to leave the club.On the opposite wing, Watford youth product Nabizada seized on another wayward Southampton pass, this time by Ryan Manning, to speed away down the right. It appeared as if the teenager had pushed the ball too far as he drove into the Southampton area before he suddenly unleashed a low shot into the far bottom corner.Southampton reduced their arrears in the second half. Cameron Bragg stabbed the ball through to Cyle Larin 10 yards from goal, and the Canada international slid the ball past Federico Ravaglia in the 56th minute.Within a minute the new Watford keeper was forced into a reaction save low down from Larin's sweeping volley.Seconds later at the other end, it might have been 3-1 to the hosts when the lively Bravo looked certain to extend Watford's lead, only for Manning to charge down his shot with a brilliant sliding challenge.Southampton mounted a late siege to the Watford goal but Harwood-Bellis wasted their clearest opening.Ex-Southampton striker Kevin Phillips told Sky Sports:"The pressure's going to start again, isn't it?"They didn't perform today. You can't afford to slip up when you're four points behind."There's still a long way to go, and they showed last season that they can go on a run when they get it right."I don't think he picked the right team to start off with."The pressure's there, and we all know why. The next game for them is crucial, and they have to win it - it's as simple as that."

Celtic ease into League Cup quarters - Aberdeen, Kilmarnock & Ross Co also through

A round-up from the Scottish League Cup as Celtic eased through to the quarter-finals with 4-0 victory at Dundee United, Aberdeen beat Dundee, Kilmarnock won against Ayr United, while League One Ross County shocked Dunfermline.Camilo Duran scored his first goal for Celtic as they won at Tannadice Park to secure their place in Sunday's quarter-final draw. The Colombian striker fired into the net after Auston Trusty headed home from Benjamin Nygren's corner in the first half.Sebastian Tounekti fired low into the corner of the net, and Nygren curled in from the edge of the box to secure a comfortable win for last season's runners-up.New signings Mika Baur and Haissem Hassan came on for their club debuts ahead of Wednesday's Champions League qualifier against LASK at Celtic Park.Captain Kevin Nisbet's double set Aberdeen on their way to a comfortable 3-0 win over Dundee at Pittodrie.Nisbet struck in the 51st and 63rd minutes and Mitchy Ntelo grabbed a debut goal in between as the Dons blew Dundee away after the break to book a place in the quarter-finals.Dundee's cause was hampered by the loss of captain and striker Simon Murray to a knee injury during the first half of the second-round tie.Got Sky? Sheff Utd & Birmingham draw a blank on opening day

xxxxSheffield United and Birmingham made an underwhelming start to the Championship season as they played out a goalless draw at Bramall Lane. Both sides have ambitions of mounting promotion challenges this campaign, but there was not too much to get excited about in this drab curtain-raiser where chances were at a premium.Blades boss Chris Wilder and Birmingham counterpart Chris Davies will both be hoping to add some extra quality into the squads before the end of the month.Optimism is always high at the start of a new season, but this was not a case of either side hitting the ground running as a tightly contested first half passed without either side managing a shot on target. The only action of note in the opening 45 minutes was a flurry of action just before the half-hour as both teams enjoyed their best moments. The Blades went first as Patrick Bamford hooked Femi Seriki's deflected cross just wide.Birmingham responded straight away and Alex Cochrane's cross was perfect for Paik Seung-ho, but the South Korean could not get enough on his header and the chance passed.Blues started the second half on the front foot and had a big moment in the 58th minute when Carlos Vicente was played through on goal, but his attempted pass was cut out by Japhet Tanganga when the better option was to shoot. The visitors began to turn the screw and produced the first shot on target in the 62nd minute when Jay Stansfield's low show was well kept out by Michael Cooper.Cooper then had a more routine save as Stansfield tried an optimistic effort from distance.Wilder's side got through that tricky period and began to launch their own attempt to win the game.Callum O'Hare sent Bamford clear into the area, but his shot was straight at Blues goalkeeper James Beadle, who saved with his feet.Neither side showed the quality required to break the deadlock in an opening encounter which will be soon forgotten.

Man Utd collapse to defeat against Amorim’s AC Milan

Manchester United collapsed to a 4-2 defeat as Ruben Amorim’s AC Milan came from behind to win in Poland.Harry Maguire had opened the scoring in the second minute when he headed in from Bruno Fernandes' corner and when Amad Diallo came close to a second soon after it looked likely to be a difficult day for Amorim in his first meeting against his former club. But after Senne Lammens did well to keep out Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Goncalo Ramos laid an equaliser on for Samuel Chukwueze. United then squandered the opportunity to go in ahead at the interval when Fernandes had his firmly struck penalty well saved.Patrick Dorgu did seized on a sloppy back-pass by Filippo Terracciano to restore United's advantage but they were pegged back once more when Alphadjo Cisse ghosted in at the far post as Chukwueze tore Michael Carrick's team apart on the right for the Rossoneri. The winger set up Ramos to nod Milan in front for the first time and it was that same flank that was exposed when Ruben Loftus-Cheek made it four. With the Premier League season under way next weekend it was a little alarming how things unravelled. The introduction of the United substitutes did not help with Lisandro Martinez easing his way back after his World Cup exertions and Kobbie Mainoo also returning. West Brom earn controversial win at Norwich

West Brom launched a smash-and-grab raid to open their Championship campaign with a hard-fought 2-1 win at Norwich. The Baggies were under the cosh for long periods at Carrow Road but stood firm before scoring twice late on through Aune Heggebo and Jimmy-Jay Morgan to secure an unlikely victory, although Heggebo's opener appeared to come off his hand.Norwich substitute Mathias Kvistgaarden reduced the arrears in the 90th minute but it was too little, too late for a home side who will wonder how they failed to take all three points, let alone one.The hosts took the game to their visitors from the word go and went close to taking the lead after just four minutes.Kenny McLean had a clear sight of goal after playing a sharp one two with Anis Ben Slimane on the right but Albion keeper Max O'Leary made an excellent stop to thwart the City skipper. That proved to be the clearest opening of a tight first half which the Canaries had the better of without seriously troubling O'Leary again.Defender Kellen Fisher's snap-shot from the edge of the box was comfortably dealt with and, when a cross from left looked set to produce the opener, a brilliant last-ditch clearance from Callum Styles snuffed out the danger. The Baggies defended well but struggled to produce anything in the final third, with Heggebo dragging their only real opening of the half well wide on 25 minutes.Norwich were again on the front foot at the start of the second period and it required an excellent block from Nat Phillips to deflect Ben Slimane's goal-bound effort into the side-netting.Phillips was at it again on the hour mark to prevent what looked like a certain goal. This time Paris Maghoma produced some magic on the edge of the box before setting up a glorious chance for Andre Brooks but the big defender got his imposing frame in the way.The home pressure was now incessant, with Mohamed Toure hitting an upright after wriggling his way through from the left and O'Leary then keeping out Fisher's flick after the defender had popped up unmarked at the back post.It seemed as though a home goal was inevitable but when the opener eventually arrived on 75 minutes it was at the other end as Albion made their first clear chance of the match count.Styles did well to put in Morgan through the inside left channel and his low cross was bundled over the line by Heggebo, with the hosts appealing in vain for offside. Although the ball did seem to strike his arm to cross the line.Vladan Kovacevic made a superb save to prevent Isaac Price from doubling Albion's advantage from long range eight minutes later. But after Styles had made another fine block, Albion broke upfield to make it 2-0 on 87 minutes. Morgan showed great composure after being given a clear run down the left and worked his way skilfully into the box before drilling the ball home.Norwich were not finished, however, and pulled one back as the game entered added time. O'Leary made an incredible reflex stop to deny Jacob Wright but fellow substitute Kvistgaarden was on hand to nod home the loose ball.

Moore double gives Spurs win over Hoffenheim as Robertson impresses

Mikey Moore scored twice in Tottenham’s 3-0 home pre-season home win over Hoffenheim. The 19-year-old's second-half goals were both set up by Mathys Tel after Richarlison hit a first-half opener from Andy Robertson's cross.Four new summer signings - Robertson, Sandro Tonali, Jan Paul van Hecke and Marcos Sensi - all made their home debuts in the win, which keeps Spurs unbeaten in pre-season.But there were some notable absentees from the victory, including Micky van de Ven, James Maddison and Mateus Fernandes.Spurs fans will be hoping some of the missing players will play a part in Sunday's final pre-season game against the same opponents in a behind-closed-doors game at the club's training ground.Roberto De Zerbi's side then open their Premier League campaign at Brentford next Saturday, live on Sky Sports. Not got Sky? Get instant access with no contractHere, Sky Sports assesses Spurs' pre-season win over Hoffenheim in their first home game since avoiding relegation in May…Two players who were linked with moves away from Spurs delivered good performances in the win.Moore was on the cusp of a loan move to Bundesliga side Cologne last week, but with that now on hold the teenager has given De Zerbi plenty to ponder with his two-goal display. The 19-year-old produced a muted celebration for his first, as he tapped in Tel's cross, but he showed his delight for his second as he deftly finished off Tel's pass. The Spurs academy graduate's destination for the new season is still undecided.Meanwhile, Lucas Bergvall looked like he might be leaving Tottenham two months ago.Newcastle and Nottingham Forest were interested in the midfielder, and it remains to be seen whether he will be at the club after deadline day.De Zerbi insists he wants to keep the midfielder after addressing the player's concerns over lack of game timeThe Sweden international has been playing regularly in pre-season, and his display at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday would have encouraged his head coach.Michael BridgeAndy Robertson left Liverpool because he wanted more game time - and on this evidence he will be getting it.The Scotland international was superb on Spurs' left side in the win as he delivered cross after cross, with a pinpoint delivery for Richarlison's opener. The 32-year-old's arrival was seen as a great move for the Spurs dressing room, as he brought a wealth of winning experience, but against Hoffenheim he showed his on-field quality. With fellow left-back Destiny Udogie still yet to play in pre-season and concerns around the Italy international's fitness, Robertson has taken advantage of his absence. The ex-Liverpool defender looks nailed on to start at Brentford next Saturday for Spurs' Premier League opener - and on this form, Udogie could well find it tough to oust the man eight years his senior.Declan OlleySpurs' clean sheet in the win was largely thanks to Antonin Kinsky. The Tottenham goalkeeper made several saves to keep Hoffenheim at bay, thus proving his new number one status.Kinsky also dealt adeptly with crosses and was good with the ball at his feet, showing why he will be a great fit for De Zerbi's system. It is some turnaround for the 23-year-old since his horror show in Madrid seven months ago, and he has deservedly taken the spot of Guglielmo Vicario, who was not involved on Saturday with Juventus eyeing a move for the Italy international.Declan Olley
