Arteta says he will sign new Arsenal contract in 'organic way'

Mikel Arteta has revealed he will sign a new Arsenal contract and there is no need for fans to be worried about his future.Arteta has entered the final year of his contract with the Premier League champions - despite co-chairman Josh Kroenke saying in May that a new deal was an "upmost priority" of the club. But Arteta says he and the club will come together to "resolve" a contract extension in "an organic way" - because he is happy at the club, and his bosses appear happy with him."They [the fans] don't have to worry about any of that because I want to be here, I'm extremely happy and I feel very grateful to work with the people I work with," said Arteta about his contract talks."When we have the possibility, we will resolve that. That's it."Everybody feels comfortable that the timing of the contract is not going to be an issue because my will certainly is to be here and I'm very happy here. My feeling from the club is the same one. That's why everyone is doing things in a very organic way."Arteta also addressed questions about whether his team have enough firepower this season to reclaim the Premier League title - and win the other competitions as well.Despite winning the Premier League and reaching the Champions League final, Arteta's Arsenal were accused of not being too attacking last term - although there was praise for their defensive solidity.Arsenal have added Bruno Guimaraes and Christos Tzolis to their midfield and attack this season - having sold Leandro Trossard to Besiktas.Apart from that, the Gunners have mostly the same midfielders and forwards that ended last season - despite showing an interest in Vinicius Junior, Julian Alvarez and Bradley Barcola in the attacking areas.Asked if he has enough attacking quality up front at the moment, Arteta replied: "If they are fit, yes."But when you look last year at the amount of days, games, months that we missed a lot of our important players and players with a lot of goal threat, the manner that we sustained to have the season that we had, I think is remarkable."It talks about the team playing and conducting, and I think it's something that the team deserves credit for."We're going to prefer to elevate our level, for sure, expecting that the rest will do the same, because that's traditionally what happened in the league in the last few years. And that's what we have planned this season, and we want to evolve it."I have to prepare a team that is capable of winning in whatever the context is: because we're not good enough on the day, because the opponent is so good, because the differences in games. That's my job, that's how I will prepare the team."

‘Not going to be an issue’: Mikel Arteta relaxed about Arsenal contract situation

Manager’s deal expires at end of the new season‘They don’t have to worry … I want to be here’Mikel Arteta has said he is relaxed about his Arsenal contract expiring at the end of the new season and believes his side will need to be better than last year to defend their title successfully. The Premier League champions will face Enzo Maresca’s Manchester City in the Community Shield in Cardiff on Sunday and are heavy favourites to win back-to-back league titles for the first time since the 1930s. The departure of Pep Guardiola from their traditional rivals City means Arteta is now the Premier League’s longest-serving manager, with the Spaniard having joined in December 2019.He signed a three-year contract extension in September 2024 after Arsenal finished as runners-up to City and had been expected to agree a new deal over the summer that would make him one of the highest-paid managers in the world. Arteta acknowledged on Friday that his priorities have been elsewhere this summer as he attempts to strengthen his squad before the new season but reassured supporters that he is fully committed to the club.“They don’t have to worry about any of that, because I want to be here. I am extremely happy. I feel very grateful to work with the people that I work with and when we have the possibility, we will resolve that. And that’s it,” he said.Asked if he expects talks over a new contract to continue after the transfer window, Arteta added: “There is always another priority, I think. And that’s the way we have been treating it, I think because everybody feels comfortable that the time on the contract is not going to be an issue. I think because my will, certainly, is to be here and I am very happy here. My feeling from the club is the same one. That is why everyone is doing things in a really organic way.”Arsenal have opened negotiations with Bayer Leverkusen over a move for Jarell Quansah as they seek cover for William Saliba and Jurriën Timber, while they are still in the market for another attacker if they can offload Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Jesus. After missing out on Vinícius Júnior when the Brazil forward opted to sign a new deal with Real Madrid, Arteta defended Arsenal’s strategy this summer and is hoping that they can still add to their squad.“I am really happy with the squad, the players that I have and I am really happy with the ambition of the club. There is zero question about that. We have shown that in the manner we have tried to act,” he said.“But I think we need to do it our own way. We have super strengths and we have other areas we need to be very conscious [of] because we don’t have the elements or the structure that other clubs have. We need to do it our way. We are always on it that way and we will do what we believe is the right thing to do. To have the best possibility to compete in every competition that’s for sure.”Arteta added: “We’re going to prepare to elevate our level, expecting that the rest will do the same. That’s traditionally what happened in the league in the last few years, and that’s the way we have planned the season, and the way we want to evolve the team.”

Arteta not worried about Arsenal contract talks

Arsenal reporterPublished3 minutes agoCommentsMikel Arteta has said that supporters "don't have to worry about" his future at Arsenal as he wants to extend his contract and the time left on his deal is "not an issue".The Gunners boss is into the final 12 months of his agreement that he signed in 2024 but says he is relaxed about formal talks taking place regarding a renewal.Arteta has been in charge of Arsenal since 2019 and led the club to their first Premier League title in 22 years last season.Arsenal face Manchester City in the Community Shield on Sunday (15:00 BST) and Arteta was asked in his news conference about the concern some supporters may have given he is yet to agreed a new deal before the 2026-27 campaign kicks off."No, they don't have to worry about any of that because I want to be here, I'm extremely happy," Arteta said."I feel very grateful to work with the people that I work with and whenever we have the possibility we will resolve that and that's it."The Gunners are attempting to build on their success of last season and strengthen their squad in the transfer window. They were unsuccessful in their pursuit of Real Madrid winger Vinicius Jr but have signed midfielder Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle, Greece international winger Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge and made Piero Hincapie's loan move from Bayern Leverkusen into a permanent transfer for a combined £143.5m.Goalkeeper Illan Meslier has also arrived on a free transfer from Leeds United while, from last season's squad, Leandro Trossard, Jakub Kiwior and Christian Norgaard have been moved on.The Gunners remain interested in Aston Villa's Ezri Konsa or Jarell Quansah of Bayer Leverkusen as a further defensive reinforcement in the market following injuries to William Saliba and Jurrien Timber. With the transfer window open until 1 September, the feeling at the club is that finalising a contract can come at a quieter period in the season."There's always another priority I think and that's the way we've been treating it. Arteta added."I think because everybody feels comfortable that the time on the contract is not going to be an issue."I think because my will certainly is to be here and I'm very happy here."And my feeling from the club is is the same one so I think that's why everybody doing it things in a really organic way."Arsenal also reached the Champions League final last season where they were beaten by Paris St-Germain and Arteta has repeatedly spoken of his ambition since that loss to take the Gunners to next level."I'm not going to talk about any individuals, obviously what I can tell you is the ambition of the club." Arteta said."It's big that we want to improve the squad, we want to evolve the squad in order to achieve that."We have obviously detected some areas that they can be strengthened and that's what we are trying to do."Ask our team about Arsenal's transfer businessLatest Arsenal news, analysis and fan views

Jimenez salvages dramatic point for Wolves on Molineux return

Raul Jimenez scored a stoppage-time equaliser from the penalty spot on his return to Molineux to salvage a 2-2 draw for Wolves against Blackburn.Wolves took the lead through Marshall Munetsi when Fer Lopez threaded the ball through for him to finish neatly beyond Balazs Hoth. But Blackburn scored a deserved equaliser when Sean McLoughlin nodded in from Ryoya Morishita's right-wing cross. And Rovers stunned most of the 30,984 inside Molineux when Andri Gudjohnsen converted from close range early in the second half. Wolves turned to returning hero Jimenez off the bench but there was very little sign of them finding an equaliser. That changed when Jackson Tchatchoua's left-wing cross struck the hand of the otherwise excellent Ryan Alebiosu just inside the box and the referee awarded a penalty. Jimenez held his nerve to snatch a point for Cesar Peixoto's Wolves side.It was barely deserved. Tony Mowbray's Blackburn, unfancied going into the campaign before a ball was kicked, could not hold on for the victory but did exceed expectations. Wolves will need to improve significantly if they are to come close to satisfying theirs.18 - GOAL! Munetsi opens the scoring for Wolves28 - GOAL! McLoughlin nods Blackburn level49 - GOAL! Jimenez converts a penalty to equaliseWolves hero Raul Jimenez speaking to Sky Sports:"It's amazing to be back, scoring in the first game of the season. It's not the result we were looking for in our first home game of the new season, so we need to learn from this. All the games are going to be difficult here, no matter who we play against."We need to keep going, it's just the start. I'm going to keep working and going forward to keep improving with the team, to hopefully earn many points and score a lot of goals."On giving out free 'Si Senor' scarves to the Wolves supporters in the Sir Jack Hayward Stand:"It's nice to give them back some love that they were showing me for the past eight years, even when I wasn't here at the club. I felt the big love they had for me, so it's the least I could do."

Raúl Jiménez’s injury-time penalty salvages point for Wolves against Blackburn

Raúl Jiménez marked his return to Wolves with the stoppage-time equaliser that saved them from an embarrassing start to their return to the Championship. The Mexico striker, who scored against England during the World Cup finals, retained his composure to convert a penalty given for handball by Rayan Alebiosu that would have had VAR questioning whether the defender was in the area when Jackson Tchatchoua’s cross struck his arm. Thankfully for Wolves, the video assistant referee is no longer their problem. Jiménez, who had bought scarves for all supporters in the South Bank in gratitude for their response to welcoming him home, tucked away his first goal in this second spell for the club he graced during their recent heyday. All that’s gold does not glisten. Wolves may have reverted to a richer sheen of their traditional colour on their return to the Championship after nine years in the Premier League, but that does not mean the gloom of relegation ends there. Cesar Peixoto’s new era in the league got off to a disappointing start as they were fortunate to gain a point off unfancied Blackburn Rovers and their former West Bromwich Albion manager Tony Mowbray.Goals from Sean McLoughlin and Andri Gudjohnsen allowed Blackburn to provide Wolves with a reality check after Marshall Munetsi had given them an early lead. Confidence is a fragile commodity and, after their decision to replace Rob Edwards with a manager with no experience of English football, the Wolves board know that their supporters’ patience is thin. Leading Gil Vicente to sixth place in the Portuguese first division does not make Peixoto a guaranteed winner.Molineux was awash with fading golden sunlight and rising optimism at kick-off. A summer that started with such a surprising managerial departure is promising to end with renewed faith in the team’s direction of travel, if the early noises are anything to go by.While Wolves had organised a stash of Starbars for the head coach’s corner of the away dressing room, in honour of Tony Mowbray’s legendary love of chocolate, the returning Wolves striker Jiménez had gifted a scarf for every supporter in the South Bank. But it was the Blackburn defence who were most giving in the early stages as they split generously to allow Marshall Munetsi a clean run through onto Fer López’s sumptuous pass. The left-footed finish from the Zimbabwean, himself coming back to Molineux after a loan at Paris FC, compounded the feelgood factor buzzing around the ground.Cesar Peixoto has promised to bring a front-footed high press to Wolves, since he replaced Rob Edwards as head coach, and this has been effective in pre-season and against Port Vale in the Carabao Cup. But it also leaves gaps on transition. Blackburn, who finished 20th last season and have not done so much in the transfer market to suggest they should aim higher this term, got behind Wolves on several occasions. It was no great surprise therefore when, from another superb right-wing cross from Ryoya Morishita, Sean McLoughlin, timing his run off André to perfection, headed beyond Dan Bentley to equalise. Some of Wolves’ best business so far this summer has been bringing players back to Molineux. While Jiménez started the night on the bench, after a late start to pre-season following his impressive World Cup for Mexico, López was the classiest player on view. Back from a loan spell at Celta Vigo, he has been invited to make the No 10 position his own, and the Spaniard so nearly regained Wolves the lead only to curl his shot just wide.Receiving Kieran Trippier’s prompt, Mateus Mané also swerved a shot just over as Wolves finished the half on the up.Blackburn continued to benefit from Wolves’ soft centre however. Oladapo Afolayan’s shot needed tipping over by Bentley before the right winger again got space down Wolves left – where David Møller Wolfe, the Norway left-back, was in for the injured Hugo Bueno – to cross for Andri Gudjohnsen to get in front of his man and turn in Rovers’ second goal.By the hour mark, the South Bank were swirling their Jiménez scarves above their heads and chanting ‘Si Senor’ in honour of the veteran striker who was such an esteemed figure here at Molineux for five of the club’s best years in modern times. He was the pivotal attacking player during Nuno Espírito Santo’s reign when Wolves reached the latter stages of the FA Cup and the Europa League. The scene was set for the Mexican. Could he deliver?Jiménez struck one free-kick into the wall, before laying an astute pass back for Tommy Doyle, though his fellow substitute could only hammer the ball over the bar after appearing to handle. It was interesting that Tripper was withdrawn, and Peixoto’s game plan was being questioned when two youngsters, in Pedro Lima and Tawanda Chirewa, were thrown on into a rejigged 4-4-2 for the final 10 minutes.

Departing Romero says he wasn't perfect at Spurs

9 CommentsCristian Romero has said he "wasn't perfect" during his five years with Tottenham Hotspur. The Argentina centre-back is set to complete a move to Atletico Madrid after they agreed to pay Spurs £34.2m for the 28-year-old.Romero's last game for Tottenham was against Sunderland in April, when he left the field in tears with a knee injury that would rule him out of Spurs' last six Premier League games. The team were in a relegation battle and Romero upset fans by planning to be in Argentina for their final game, to watch his first club Belgrano play in the Primera Division Apertura final. He ultimately returned to England to attend Spurs' 1-0 win over Everton, which meant they stayed up and finished 17th for a second consecutive season."I know I wasn't perfect," Romero posted on X., external "But one thing gives me peace: I always gave everything. I defended this shirt with pride and with all my heart."Romero joined Tottenham from Atalanta in 2021 and became a mainstay in their defence, making 156 appearances. His best moment with Spurs was helping the club win their first trophy in 17 years as they beat Manchester United in the 2025 Europa League final."When I arrived, I had a clear dream: to leave my name in this club's history," Romero added."I knew the only way was through hard work, sacrifice and achieving something that had seemed so difficult for so long: lifting a trophy again. Romero announces Spurs exit ahead of Atletico transfer

Tottenham captain Cristian Romero has confirmed he is leaving the club ahead of his move to Atletico Madrid being announced.Atletico have agreed a deal worth in the region of £34.2m (€40m) for Romero, while Spurs retain a 15 per cent sell-on clause. In a post on Instagram, Romero bade farewell to the fans and said he had achieved his dream of leaving his name in the club's history as the captain of the side that ended Spurs' 17-year trophy drought.View this post on Instagram A post shared by Cristian Romero (@cutiromero2)"Today, I say goodbye to a place that, for five seasons, was much more than a club. It was my home, my challenge and the place where my family and I built such an important part of our lives."I leave with a heart full of memories and enormous pride for everything we lived and achieved together."When I arrived, I had a clear dream: to leave my name in this club's history. I knew the only way was through hard work, sacrifice and achieving something that had seemed so difficult for so long: lifting a trophy again. And we did it."The journey wasn't perfect, but I don't want that to define my goodbye. I choose to remember the happy moments, the lessons, the people who stood by me and, above all, the love I received during these five years."Thank you to everyone at the club who shared this journey with me. Coaches, team-mates, staff and every person working behind the scenes you are all part of my story and have a place in my heart."Atletico have been long-term admirers of the Argentina international, and there was an expectation that Spurs would allow Romero to depart this summer if the right offer arrived. The central defender was always believed to have preferred a move to Atletico, with Inter Milan and Spurs' north London rivals Arsenal among the other clubs to have been interested.Romero's Spurs deal was due to run until the summer of 2029.The 28-year-old was sent off twice last season during Spurs' Premier League relegation battle. He then missed the end of the campaign due to a knee injury.Romero received criticism from supporters when he appeared to be set to watch his boyhood club Belgrano play River Plate in the Argentina Primera Division Apertura final instead of being at Tottenham's crucial last game against Everton. However, he did ultimately attend the game.

Wolves v Blackburn: Championship opener – live

Formation-wise, a few outlets have Wolves listed in a 4-2-3-1, rather than the 3-4-2-1 I outlined earlier on. Looks like Rodrigo Gomes could play as a genuine winger rather than a wing-back.Wolves are also without Hwang Hee-Chan, Sasa Kalajdzic, Santiago Bueno and Ladislav Krejci for a variety of reasons. Damn, they’ve got a strong squad for the Championship, even if a couple of the aforementioned depart.
